Radicals for Capitalism by Brian Doherty

I Hit Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area, Sunday and Monday

April 13, 2007 · No Comments

It’s my home away from home thanks to all the time I spent there researching my first book, This is Burning Man, and now I’m back–to talk about Radicals for Capitalism. And answer questions, and sign copies, all the usual stuff.

Sunday, April 15, I’m at Cody’s Bookstore, 1730 Fourth Street, Berkeley, CA, starting at 4 p.m. A fine afternoon’s outing for all. Free, and about freedom–what could be better?

For those who just like to listen, I’ll be talking up the book the next day on San Francisco radio, KGO, 810 on the AM dial, the Pete Wilson Show, on Monday April 16 from 3-4 p.m., pacific time. You can listen live here.

Tell a friend, bring a friend.

So Much New Stuff…

April 8, 2007 · No Comments

…has been going on I have not had time to blog about it. Quickly: Portland and Seattle were both marvelous; thanks especially to Chris Radcliffe in Portland for the hat and the seafood, and to John Rinaldi for being my bodyguard on the trip, and to all who showed up and–especially–bought books.

Front Page Magazine interviewed me about the book, interview conducted by Jamie Glazov. Here it is.

The Orange County Register ran an op-ed spun off the book, about their former publisher R.C. Hoiles. Here it is.

And the goddamn New York Times ran a dumb and hostile review of the book. Why is it dumb? Let David Boaz, Gene Healy, and Will Wilkinson explain why to you, just so you aren’t taking my word for it. Paging Men’s Recovery Project…

I am scheduled to appear at Cody’s in Berkeley CA to talk about and sign the book Sunday April 15 at 4 pm. More later…

Radio Updates–Urgent and Semi-Urgent

March 26, 2007 · 1 Comment

I really need a personal assistant these days—OK, in about 20 minutes from posting, I’ll be appearing on the “Sloan Ranger Show” on WGNU-920 AM in St. Louis. Starting sometime around 6:10-6:15ish central (local) time, going on for 15 min or so.

A bunch more coming up tomorrow and Wednesday. Tomorrow, Tuesday March 27, I’ll be on Portland’s Air America affiliate KPOJ-AM (620 on AM dial) from 7 am-7:15 am, the Thom Hartmann (see that link for national syndication areas for the show) show.

The Radicals Tour Hits the Seattle and Portland! I Make the LA Times Again! And more…

March 25, 2007 · No Comments

Hard to blog while on the road last week for bunches of incredibly happy-making events out at GMU, at Cato, and a special party thrown for me at Reason’s new D.C. HQ. Back in Los Angeles very briefly, and with good timing: because today an op-ed spun off my book is in the Sunday Los Angeles Times. Read it here.

Biggest news this week: two new personal appearances, in Seattle and Portland. The facts:

Tuesday, March 27, 7p.m., Seattle, University Bookstore, 4326 University Way, NE. I’ll talk about the book, and sign copies for those who kindly buy one.

Then on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m., Portland, Powell’s Bookstore, 1005 W. Burnside. Just like in Seattle…

While in the area, I’ll also be doing a couple of radio appearances, both on Wednesday March 28: From 1-2 pm on KIRO-AM in Seattle, 710 on the AM Dial. Then at 7 pm that evening in Portland, right before the Powell’s appearance, I’ll be on KPAM-AM in Portland, from 7-7:15 p.m., 860 on the AM dial.

In addition to all that, I’ve got a new interview up at Catallarchy (which for some reason appears to be frozen now; I’ll get a link up when I can); and a new review of the book appeared in the Politico, the new D.C. political paper.

Aaaaand that’s not all. (Maybe this should have been five different posts?) My response to the responses to my essay on libertarianism’s past and prospects is now up at Cato Unbound.

Doherty Hits the Capital This Week: First Step of the Invasion, Carow Hall, George Mason University, Fairfax Campus

March 19, 2007 · No Comments

I wasn’t certain this one was open to the public, but turns out it is: I’ll be giving a lecture focusing on the role of economists and economics in the story told in Radicals for Capitalism on Wednesday March 21 at the Public Choice Center Seminar Series at George Mason University, in Carow Hall at the Fairfax campus, Fairfax VA.

The lecture starts at 4 pm–questions will be answered after my prepared remarks, amusement and education will occur. Cost: nothing but your time and attention.

Cato Unbound–The Responses Are All In

March 19, 2007 · No Comments

I promised to update here as responses to my roundtable-launching Cato Unbound essay “Libertarianism: Past and Prospects” went up, and have been neglectful.

At any rate, now they are ALL up—and it is now my duty to write a response, a duty I’m neglecting EVEN NOW. Here they all are, in order–and I am honored to be in their company, however much we may disagree on this or that. (Two of them–Brink Lindsey and Virginia Postrel–are old bosses of mine, and I’m STILL proud and pleased to be in their company….) Anyway, check out the thoughts on libertarianism and its future from Tyler Cowen, Brink Lindsey, Tom Palmer, and Virginia Postrel. My response soon at Cato Unbound, and I’ll be sure to let you know about it here as soon as it is up.

Doherty Hits the Capital This Week

March 19, 2007 · No Comments

Doing various things in D.C. this week to promote the book, some free-and-open-to-the-public and others not. One that is happens Thursday March 22, a noontime book forum at the Cato Institute in which I talk about the book, superpundit E.J. Dionne comments, and Cato’s David Boaz moderates.  Cato likes RSVPs–here is a link to do so, either online or by phone. They even serve a free lunch afterward—Friedmanite ironies aside. All D.C.ers, some on by.

In other news, Justin Raimondo at antiwar.com has a detailed, though often misguided (mostly about my “stance” on what he calls the radical-pragmatist divide–my book doesn’t have the thesis that he reads into it), review essay about my book.

In other news, five weeks after official release, I’m still hovering in Amazon’s top 1000–which pleases me greatly.

I Make the LA Times (for a bad reason)

March 15, 2007 · No Comments

First off, thanks to the enthusiastic and attentive and book-buying crowd who showed up at the Pasadena Libertarian Supper Club. It was a pleasure speaking to and answering questions from all of you.

And today, my book gets its first (and I hope not its last) mention in the Los Angeles Times–alas, because my beloved old pal and colleague Tim Cavanaugh was–because of a pure and awful error on my part–ignored in the acknowledgements for the book. Tim gets a very amusing column out of my neglect. I will acknowledge Tim’s wisdom, input to the book, and general wonderful effect on my career (as editor of Suck.com in the 1990s, he drew out of me some of my own favorite writing) with every breath from now on…..

The roadshow bringing the good word of Radicals for Capitalism continues tonight, March 14, at the Libertarian Supper Club of Pasadena.

The time: dinner at 7:30 p.m.; my talk starts at 8 p.m.

Dinner will cost whatever dinner costs; no admission fee otherwise. All of you, be there.

Permalinks to old Reviews being added

March 13, 2007 · No Comments

As my attempts to create a separate permalink category in right margin under a “reviews” heading has so far failed, I’m slowly adding them under “Brian Doherty links” with the publication title and the word “review” appended, which I hope proves clear enough. I’m doing the same for old interviews–name of publication or interviewer with word “interview” appended. I would love to eventually have clearly labeled subcategories in the right side permalinks for interviews and reviews, but so far I’m having difficultly making WordPress create such categories and make them actually visible. Any WordPress wise readers who can help me with this, let me know in comments and we’ll bat it about.
